About Lisa

Picture

I am a prize winning writer of fiction and poetry. My personal essays have also been published in print venues. A first novel was read by prestigious agents eliciting high encouragement  and I am at work on a second.

My clients are published authors by traditional publishers and award winning self-published. They have been shortlisted for international literary contests and published in fine literary journals.  They are ESL students and college students, business owners, business professionals and consultants, novelists, memoirists, poets, artists, musicians, and educators and more.

I have been offering literary services
since 2002.

Work can be sent through e-mail.
Note that a standard page
is 250 words.

"There is no doubt every writer will receive invaluable insight from this process and that every manuscript will be greatly improved. I highly recommend working with Lisa.” – Maria Semple, author, Today Will Be Different (2016) This One is Mine ( 2008); Where’d You Go Bernadette (2012) (Little, Brown); television writer/ “Arrested Development,” “Saturday Night Live,” “Mad About You,” “Ellen”.

I offer story editing in the form of manuscript evaluations and consults/coaching and a workshop writing environment in which to create new work. While I'm an excellent line editor, I specialize in the broader problems of content and structure, while working with the writer to discover their direction and their unique voice, and the manuscript’s shape and purpose.

I hold a Bachelors Degree in English-Creative Writing Emphasis from UCLA, where I was selected with nine other students to study under Carolyn See (There Will Never Be Another You; Making a Literary Life; The Handyman; Ballantine Press). I've studied editing privately with Jack Grapes (Onthebus Literary Journal, Bombshelter Press); story structure with former literary agent and consultant Lisa Cron (Wired for Story, Ten Speed Press) in private workshops, and have taken courses on writing and copyediting at UCLA Extension.

My publications include internationally and in the United States (Chiron Review, Rattle, Galway Review, Lothlorien Poetry Journal, ONTHEBUS, Rebelle Society, The Urban Howl, Common Ties, Literary Mama, California Quarterly, Poemimage, The Venice Beachhead--lead story, featured in Cultural Weekly, The Public Poetry Series--Fjords Review, Writing in a Woman's Voice, Serving House Journal, among others), Second Place Prize Winner in the 2008 Biannual Blue Mountain Arts Poetry Contest, 14th and 26th Moon Prize for Writing In a Woman's Voice, and First Place Dandelion Press Micro Fiction Contest 2017; Honorable Mention 2019 -- Fine artist Lori Preusch included it in her Art Exhibition December 2017 in Durango Colorado. In 2018 I was interviewed for WOW Whisper — Exploring the Heart of Conversation & High Performance Communication Podcast series. In 2019 I was nominated for BEST OF THE NET Anthology and also received a Pushcart Nomination. Semi-Finalist for the Tom Howard/Margaret Reid Poetry Prize 2020.

While I was an Assistant Fiction Editor at 42opus an Online Literary Magazine of the Arts, my freelance editing business (formerly Barrington Editorial) was mentioned in the 2009 Children’s Writer Guide in an article by Christina Hamlett. I have been a panelist several times for both the Greater Los Angeles Writers Society and for Independent Writers of Southern California (IWOSC). I co-chaired a Poetry Critique Group for GLAWS and have conducted workshops at West Los Angeles Community College Creative Writers Club, California State University Los Angeles, and was on staff as an instructor at Santa Monica College Community Services.

I have been asked to read my work at West Hollywood Book Fair Storytelling Stage, IWOSC Reads Its Own, and have been a featured writer for Beyond Baroque Literary Center's Open Mic Series, The Rapp Saloon Reading Series, Eric Vollmer's Improvisational Theater, SHINE Storytelling Series, Library Girl Reading Series, among others.

Response from agents on my first novel: "We were very impressed," Jonny Geller, agent to Tracy Chevalier, John Le Carre (ICM; Curtis Brown U.K). Am currently working on several writing projects, including a second novel.

As a workshop facilitator/writing consultant & coach I hope to inspire beginning and experienced writers to explore new material in a safe and supportive environment. I have conducted workshops in libraries, independent bookstores, community colleges, and universities. With my literature and writing background, and my sharp eye for mechanical incongruities, my editing skills have helped many documents and manuscripts find a clearer focus, and a more resonant voice.
